Bridezillas and Momzillas, and How To Prevent Becoming One: Advice from Prosperity Mansion & Farm

Advice from Prosperity Mansion & Farm located in Frederick County Maryland and bordering Carroll County.

We get it; you want your wedding to be the perfect day to celebrate your love. We do to! What we don't want, though, is for you to be so intensely focused on every single little detail that you become a Bridezilla.

If you're not sure exactly what a Bridezilla is, the best place to start is the Bridezillas TV series. First airing in 2004, Bridezillas has highlighted the worst of the worst when it comes to drama around brides and wedding planning. It's a perfect guide for what not to do when planning your wedding. At Prosperity Mansion & Farm we have seen it all !

Bridezillas are so intensely focused on having the perfect wedding day that they will stop at nothing to get what they want. This is also common among mothers that choose to live vicariously through their children and their wedding, or Momzillas. Bridezillas and Momzillas are overbearing and more than willing to intimidate their vendors, bridal party and guests into obeying their wishes, and at the end of the day, it causes more stress and all but ensures the wedding will no go perfectly.

A Bridezilla or a Momzilla is no fun for anyone to deal with when planning a wedding. From our experience, we want our couples to be a good fit for our venue. If we're taking a couple on a tour of Prosperity Mansion & Farm and we can tell that we're dealing with a Bridezilla, we have the right to decline their booking. We have done this in the past.

Oftentimes, weddings are comprised of many outside vendors coming together, and it's common for these vendors to have never worked with each other before. There will always be growing pains when vendors are working together for the first time, and brides and moms that understand these issues are able to help fix them. Bridezillas and Momzillas are much more likely to make these issues even worse. We don't want the wedding venue to be the breeding ground for awful behaviors.

Bridezillas and Momzillas have high expectations for their wedding, and they have a right to them! After all, your wedding is supposed to be the best day of your life, and of course you want it to go smoothly. The problems arise when their expectations become unreasonable or too much to handle.

The best way to prevent becoming a Bridezilla or a Momzilla is to recognize that the best laid plans often go awry. No matter how detailed and to the minute your plans may be, there is always going to be something that will be out of your control and you cannot change. If you go in with this knowledge and are willing to work with that, your wedding venue, bridal party and vendors will thank you in the long run.

The way a bride (or her mother) acts to her bridal party and vendors has a direct impact on what happens during the planning process. If a bride is kind and cooperative, vendors and the bridal party are going to be excited about planning and the wedding itself. On the other hand, if she is expecting to much and is rude about her requests, the vendors and bridal party are much more likely to return her negative attitude and the wedding will have a negative atmosphere. Remember, you get what you give.

Bridezillas who have issues with their bridal party can also damage friendships. If you are expecting too much from your bridesmaids and are not respecting them as your friend, it can put a rift between you that could take years to repair (if at all). There are many stories on YouTube and other forms of social media about friendships that were ended because the bride was too demanding of her bridal party.

Another way to prevent becoming a Bridezilla is to make sure that your wedding doesn't go beyond your means, either financially or emotionally. Letting things go too far guarantees you'll be stressed, and stress is what turns a bride into a Bridezilla. If you make sure to reign in all of your expenses and keep things at a place where you can handle it all, you'll be far less likely to turn into a Bridezilla.

Listening to input from your vendors is another way to prevent becoming a Bridezilla. Your Maryland wedding vendors have plenty of experience with events and have often gone through the same issues as you might be. Don't be afraid to ask for their suggestions about these issues and the wedding as a whole; they want it to go well too!

The best way to prevent a Momzilla is to set clear boundaries and know when to put your foot down. When mom starts to be more present in the planning process than you're comfortable with, it's okay to let her know that she is taking away from your special day. After all, the day is about you, not her.

If you're afraid Mom isn't going to listen to you and might overstep their bounds, it's a good idea to set up a password system. Many vendors will arrange a special password for your wedding, and only people who know the password are authorized to make changes to your agreements. This is a great way to let Mom know that you have the last word and your wedding will go more smoothly.

At the end of the day, Prosperity Mansion & Farm, a Maryland wedding venue, is here to help Bridezillas are created by the stress of wedding planning. To prevent becoming one yourself, the best think to keep in mind is the famous Serenity prayer: “God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.” If you or your mom can recognize what can and cannot be changed, you are much less likely to become the dreaded Bridezilla or Momzilla.
