Here is how to get a marriage license in Carroll County Maryland.

ELIGIBILITY-   Both parties must be at least 18 years old. If either party is under 18, parental consent and a court approval are required. A Seventeen-year-old who resides in Maryland must obtain a court order from their home county before applying.  To do this in Carroll County, Maryland, you must go to the Carroll County Clerk’s Office Civil Department on the second floor and file a Petition for Authorization to Marry. The order will be reviewed, and a decision will be made whether it is valid to proceed. This process could take up to 30 days.   There is a $165 fee to file the petition, and the 17-year-old must bring their parents and a copy of a physician letter verifying pregnancy.

DOCUMENTS-  You will need to bring valid identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, and if previously married, you may also need to provide the date of your divorce or the death of your former spouse.

Hours of operation- 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM

APPLICATION-  At the Clerk’s Office, you will fill out a marriage license application. Their staff is available to assist you with any questions you may have during this process.  

1)      You may apply in person. Only one of you needs to present to apply. However, you will need the official documents for both of you when applying, not just a photo copy. You will need a valid, government-issued photo IDs for both parties (e.g., driver’s licenses or passports).

2)      Completing the ( www.carrollcountymd.govgovernmentoffice-of-the-clerk.  ) beforehand is recommended for convenience.

3)      For Non-Residents: If neither party lives in Carroll County but you’re marrying there, you can apply via a Non-Resident Affidavit through the Clerk’s Office.

PAYENTS- Cash, Credit card or Cash

FEE-  $35.00 to apply for the marriage license and an additional $25.00 if you also want to get married at the Courthouse.

WHEN CAN I GET THE LICENSE-  You may apply Monday- Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and no later than 4;00 PM. Once your application is approved and the fee is paid, you will typically receive your marriage license while you wait. HOWEVER, in Maryland, there is a 48-hour  waiting period before you are allowed to actually use the license.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT TO GET MARRIED AT THE COURTHOSE- Yes, appointments are scheduled every 30 minutes Monday- Friday. However, your ceremony takes 5 minutes or less. You may spend a few minutes to take a few photos before the next couple comes in. Again, a couple is scheduled every 30 minutes so you must be prepared to quickly move on.

IS THERE A WAITING PERIOD ONCE I RECEIVE MY LICENSE- After you receive your license you must wait 48 hrs. prior to getting married. Remember that you must wait 48 hours to get married, so if you are getting married at a wedding venue on Saturday, you must have your marriage license no later than the Thursday before your Saturday wedding.

HOW LONG IS THE LICENSE GOOD FOR – Your license if good for 6 months so no need to wait till the last minute  to apply.

FILE YOUR LICENSE-  After your wedding, your officiant will need to complete the marriage license and sign it. You will have a self-addressed envelope in your packet that you can mail. However, things can get lost so we recommend that you either hand deliver it back to the clerk’s office or call a few weeks later to make sure that they have it recorded.

 HOW LONG WILL THE CEREMONY BE- 5 minutes or less

HOW MANY GUESTS CAN I BRING-  Up to 12 guests may attend your special day.

C)      Full day DREAM weddings- from 20 -200 guests and 8-10-12 hours

You must obtain your marriage license from the COUNTY in which you are getting married. So, if you have selected a wedding venue such as Prosperity Mansion and Farm make sure you verify form them which county they are located in.

As we said Courthouse weddings no longer need to be AT the courthouse. Decide what you deserve. You may have a Courthouse wedding at Prosperity Mansion and Farm that is 1-2 hours long and from 2 – 30 guests.
