What Happens After The Wedding?

A loving couple stands at the wedding arbor during their ceremony. They are standing hand in hand.
Your wedding is the happiest day of your life! What should you do afterwards?

Advice from Prosperity Mansion & Farm, an outdoor, garden, Maryland wedding venue located in Frederick County Maryland and bordering Carroll County.

There’s a lot to keep track of when you’re planning a wedding, but not many people consider all that needs to be done AFTER your wedding is over. Our Maryland wedding venue has gathered a list of everything you should do after having the wedding of your dreams.

Enjoy the Honeymoon!

Planning a wedding can be stressful, but your honeymoon is a time for you to unwind and de-stress after the wedding ends. Kick back, relax, and enjoy your first trip together as a married couple.

Embrace the Adjustment

Now that you’re married, there’s going to be a new dynamic in your lives. Not only will you have to get used to saying “my husband” or “my wife” instead of “my fiancé(e),” there might be some unexpected adjustments in your home life as well. This is especially true if you’re moving in together for the first time once you’re married. The best thing to do is be prepared for anything and roll with it. Now that you’re together, you can do anything! The best suggestion that I ever received was “Do not make any major decisions right away”. Take sometime to adjust.

Fill Out a Change of Address Form

Are you moving somewhere new to begin your lives as a happily married couple? Make sure you fill out a Change of Address form with the post office. Don’t forget to leave the new address as a forwarding address so your mail can be sent to the right place. Inform any people or companies that send you snail mail.

Legally Change Your Name

If you’ve chosen to change your name, make sure you go through the proper steps to make the change legal and official. If you’re unsure how to get started with this, check out this blog post on what you’ll need to do. Save the forms that you fill out so that you have proof that you did it.

Update Your Name and Marital Status

Once you get married, you’ll have to update your marital status on many official documents. If you’ve changed your name, this also has to be reflected on these documents. The things you’ll have to change include:

  1. Your Social Security information. This should be the first thing you change, because you’ll need it to update everything else.

  2. Official Photo IDs, such as your driver’s license or passport. You’ll also need these to update everything else, but you’ll need your Social Security information to change your ID.

  3. Your Financial Account information. This includes bank or credit union accounts, retirement accounts, and investment accounts you may have.

  4. Your Payroll and Tax information. Once you get married, your workplace and the IRS will need to know for tax purposes.

  5. Your Insurance information. If you previously had an insurance policy of any kind together, your marital status and name will need to be updated. Alternatively, you may need to get a new policy altogether if you didn’t have one already.

  6. Your Loan information. If you have any separate or joint loans, you’ll have to let the loan creditors know that you’ve gotten married and changed your name (if that’s the case). This can include student loans, mortgages, auto loans, and more.

  7. Trust or Will, if you have one. This is so your new name is reflected, and you can ensure your new spouse is included as a beneficiary.

Additionally, there will be other offices you’ll have to contact to update your information, such as your doctor to update your medical records, the MVA to update your voter registration, your utility provider(s), and more. Many of these can be solved by filling out a simple form that the office provides.

Open Your Gifts

A common wedding tradition is for guests to bring a gift to help the happy couple transition to married life. When you open your gifts together, make sure to keep track of who gifted what and keep all gift receipts in the instance that you need to return or exchange any.

Write Thank-Yous

Sending a simple thank-you note lets your guests and vendors know how much you appreciate them. You can keep it short and sweet, but be sure to personalize it and thank your guests for any gifts they’ve given you.

Return or Exchange Registry Gifts

There’s a chance that you will receive items from your registry more than once, or you might receive a gift that doesn’t work properly. If this is the case, you might decide to return some of the duplicates or exchange faulty gifts for items that work properly. Different stores will have different return or exchange polices, so make sure you’re following each store’s individual policy.

Look Through Your Wedding Photos

Once your photographer sends you the photographs from your big day, go through them and pick your favorites! You can then talk to your photographer about ordering them as prints for your home, and you can post more photos online to share with your guests.

Leave a Nice Review

Your wedding vendors worked so hard to make your day special and memorable. Show them a little love to let them know how much you appreciate it! Leaving positive reviews for your vendors on sites such as Google, WeddingWire, The Knot, and more will let other couples looking to get married know how awesome your vendors were.

There’s so many things to keep track of before your wedding. It’s not uncommon for newly married couples to be blindsided by the list of things you’ll have to do after you get married. Prosperity Mansion & Farm hopes that we’re still able to help you ease into your new life, even after you’ve enjoyed your wedding!
