How to Obtain a Marriage License in Baltimore City

Baltimore City Maryland is a great place to get married. There are many upscale hotels with lavish ballrooms as well as wedding venues. If you already reside in Baltimore City, then it's obviously convenient as well. Here is how to get a marriage license if you will be holding your wedding "IN" Baltimore City.

Please note: This information is for the city of Baltimore only, not Baltimore County.

Circuit Court of Baltimore City

1)      Go to the Land Records/Licenses Department at the Circuit Court of Baltimore City, Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Courthouse, located at 100 North Calvert Street, Room 627, Baltimore, MD 21202. The hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Please arrive no later than 3:30 PM.

2)       Both parties in the couple no longer need to be present. At one time you both needed to be present to apply, but happily that has changed. However, you must make sure that you have proper ID for both of you such as a driver’s license, MVA identification card, birth certificate or passport. A photocopy of the absent persons identification is acceptable identification.

3)      You must fill out the application in person.

4)      The information is pretty basic. However, if either party has been married before they must provide the date and place of the marriage end (death or divorce).

5)      Cost- make sure that you have cash only to pay the $85.00 fee.

6)      You will be able to take the marriage license with you that same day.

7)      There is a 48-hour waiting period before the license is valid.

8)  The license is good for six months.

Civil Ceremony in Baltimore City

1)     No appointments are necessary.

2)    You must pay the $25.00 fee on the day of your wedding via cash.

3)    Remember that you must wait at least 48-hours after you get your license to get married.

4)     Return to the 100 North Calvert Street location and proceed back to License Department where you received your marriage license.

5) Both parties must present a valid, government-issued ID at the time of check-in and have at least one witness.

6)      Civil ceremonies take place Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Couples should arrive no later than 2:00 PM.

7)      A couple is given 15-20 minutes for their ceremony, depending on the amount of other civil ceremonies taking place.

8)      You are allowed a maximum of 6 guests.
