Advice from Prosperity Mansion & Farm an outdoor, Maryland wedding venue located in Frederick County Maryland and bordering Carroll County.

Decorations vary from wedding to wedding, but the one thing all weddings have in common is flowers. There are so many options when it comes to flowers that many couples are overwhelmed when its time to design your floral arrangements. What should you keep in mind when considering what flowers to have at your wedding?

First and foremost is the cost. How much are you willing to spend and can you spend? That will certainly help determine if you will be a DIYer or will be hiring a professional to handle your floral needs.

The least stressful option is to hire a professional florist. They have plenty of experience designing for weddings and other occasions, and they can help answer any questions you may have about centerpieces, bouquets and more. Every wedding at Prosperity Mansion & Farm that has had a professional florist has had some of the most stunning flowers we have seen. This option also takes away some of the stress from your family and friends, as many florists will also deliver the flowers the day of your wedding and will even set them up.

The downside to a professional florist is the price. If you have a tighter budget, there might not be many florists that can fit in your price range, but don’t worry! Big box stores like Costco and Sam’s Club have wonderful floral departments that have Wedding and Special Events options to choose from. These are just as gorgeous, and they cost a fraction of what a florist costs. Keep in mind that they do not deliver. So you will need to have someone pick up all of the flowers, decorate the ceremony site as well as the reception area. Everything is a trade off.

If you want to save even more money, why not go for silk flowers? Silk flowers are just as beautiful as real flowers, but because they don’t require extra care to keep them fresh, they are far more budget-friendly. Additionally, silk flowers allow you to have a part of your wedding day to keep forever!

Once you determine where to get your flowers, you need to decide where to have them on your wedding day. Of course, brides and bridesmaids have bouquets during the ceremony, and grooms and groomsmen often have matching boutonnieres. Many couples decide to have flowers line the aisle in the ceremony space, and most reception centerpieces and decorations are made of flowers. That might seem overwhelming when it comes to choosing flowers, but there are ways to double your flower use!

Our Maryland wedding venue has tree stumps that line the aisle in the ceremony space, so many of our couples choose to place reception centerpieces on them. Once the ceremony is over, our staff can relocate the flowers to the reception tent to be used as centerpieces.

After you decide where to get flowers and where to use them, it’s time to make the most important decision about flowers: what flowers to get. At the end of the day this is a choice only you can make, but there are some things to keep in mind when choosing flowers.

When are you getting married? While there are some flowers that grow year-round, there are many flowers that only bloom during certain seasons. While it is possible to get flowers outside of their blooming season, it is often more expensive to do this. If you’re keeping to a smaller budget, keep the season of your wedding in mind. If its an especially hot time of year certain flowers wilt quickly. After spending your money and or time you really want to know that all of the arrangements will at least last throughout the entire wedding day.

Do you have a color scheme? If you’re using certain colors in your decorations, this should reflect in your flowers. While your flowers don’t have to match your wedding colors exactly, they should be related and complement your colors well. For example, purple flowers in a wedding with a rust color scheme feel out of place compared to red or orange flowers.

What about fragrance from your flowers? We all know how wonderful flowers can smell. If you’re opting for real flowers at your wedding, there are some flowers that have a stronger perfume than others such as jasmine, sweet pea, and peonies. It might be wise to keep a balance when it comes to fragrance, so you and your guests are not overwhelmed. Additionally, remember if you are having an outdoor wedding at Prosperity Mansion & Farm, try not to select flowers that attract bees!

Here’s a tip: begin with the bouquet! Arguably, the most important flowers at a wedding are in the bridal bouquet. The bouquet is a bride’s statement piece that is featured in both the ceremony as she walks down the aisle and in the reception at the bridal table and during the bouquet toss. It’s also likely going to be in many of your wedding photos, so it should be the first place to start when designing your flowers. While the other flowers don’t have to be exact replicas, they should have similar elements as the bridal bouquet does.

It's a good idea to have a totally separate bouquet to toss. You've probably spent a lot of money and or time on your beautiful bridal flowers and want to have them as a keepsake. You may even want to pass them on for your children to use in their wedding if they are not real.

If you’re still stumped about what to choose for your flowers, there’s always the standards and the classics for wedding flowers that you can choose from.

Roses

For a long time, roses have been the symbolic flower of love. They open up and bloom in an elegant and beautiful way, and they grow in many colors that make them a popular choice for weddings everywhere.

Peonies

These big, beautiful bulbs are another classically elegant flower for weddings. They primarily grow in light pastel shades, but there are enough variations of peonies that they can match or complement almost any color scheme.

Dahlias

Dahlias are are popular because of range they have. Dahlias grow in many different colors and bulb sizes, so they fit in practically any color scheme or arrangement you could dream up. You can use big ones as a primary focus, or you can accent your arrangements with smaller bulbs.

Tulips

Including tulips in your designs is a great way to have real flowers without busting your budget! They’re not as expensive as other wedding flowers can be, and they accent many other flowers wonderfully.

Baby’s Breath

Another cost-friendly flower option that can be incredible on it’s own or as an accent to other flowers. The small and simple white baby’s breath flower matches almost anything and is breathtaking on it’s own.

Orchids

Orchids are a great way to add some drama to an arrangement. Their vertical appearance allows them to cascade out and spice up a bouquet or centerpiece.

Set up an appointment with a professional florist and discuss costs, ideas, hazards with certain types of flowers etc. Typically, they will do this for free. Any choice you make about your flowers is the right choice for your wedding, but we hope this was able to help guide you in your decision making!
